Winter Storm Causes Frozen Pipes

When water freezes it expands, which puts tremendous pressure on pipes whether they are plastic or metal.  With the winter storms in full effect last season, SERVPRO Of Ronkonkoma was busy helping many families and businesses recover from pipe bursts, like this one.  To help protect your home from experiencing this type of damage in the midst of a storm, you can add these items to your fall home checklist:

• Install properly rated insulation to exposed hot and cold water lines in your attic, basement, garage and crawl spaces.
• Drain and shut off the water for your swimming pool and sprinkler supply lines.
• Keep outdoor hose bibs open to allow water to drain and so any water remaining can expand without causing a break.
• Close inside lines that supply outdoor water.
