The leaves are starting their transformation, the Halloween decorations are going up and Fall is officially in full swing. We want you to enjoy all of the amazing Fall activities that Suffolk County has to offer, before you do, here are some fire hazards to check:

Halloween Decorations

This isn’t as big of a light show season as December, but a lot of people in the Ronkonkoma area like to go all out for Halloween!  We love the holiday spirit, so let’s take a look at some safety tips that can keep everyone out of harm’s way:

  • Inspect light strings to look for fraying or corrosion.
  • Don’t string lights with burnt out bulbs.  Even one burnt out bulb can turn into a hazard.
  • Don’t use outdoor lights to decorate the inside of your home, unless they are indoor/outdoor certified.
  • Take lights down within 60-90 days of putting them up.

Fall Scented Candles

Candles in the bedroom/bathroom cause close to 1/3 of all house fires in America.  People expect to light them, walk away and return to a nice relaxed atmosphere.  What you can get is the exact opposite!  We know the Apple and Pumpkin spiced candles are very hot right now… literally.... just remember to never leave a lit candle unattended, at any time of year.

Malfunctioning Electrical Appliances

Kuerigs and coffee pots become even more popular this time of year and nobody wants you to go without your coffee, but we have to be responsible.  If you have noticed any sparking or strange shut downs with your outlet, it could be because your appliances are outdated.  Let’s get rid of that old coffee pot which could be overloading your circuit and switch over to the more energy efficient Kuerig this Fall.

Fires are an unfortunate possibility of owning a home, which we may experience at one point or another.  If a fire happens to occur in your home while you are distracted, sleeping, or at work, the damage can be severe.  We know it is tough to cope with but your family at SERVPRO of Ronkonkoma has your back.  We will take all of the necessary steps to restore your home, so you can relax and watch as everything quickly returns to normal.
